Modern Day Diwali: A Reminisce of the Past ?

By:- Shashank Kumar

Indian Civilization has been one of the ancient of the established civilizations ever. Being a very ancient one, it has it's own culture, traditions, beliefs and thus own rituals and celebrations (also known as festivals). Each festivals have their own meanings and beliefs and are of vital importance to everyone (spiritually). One such festival is the one we know as "The Festival of Light - Diwali". It is believed by us Indians that on this day Lord Ram arrived Ayodhaya  following his  victory over King of Lanka- Ravan. To welcome Lord Ram, the people of Ayodhaya lit the city with Diyas. This was  a symbol of victory of good over evil. Diwali is celebrated on the 20th  day after Dussehra. We have been celebrating Diwali since then. We worship Devi Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity on this day. We have done a wonderful job to keep our culture good and alive ,umm or have we ? We have definitely kept it alive but far from good.

Diwali is also known as Deepawali and as the name itself says "Deep" which means Diya. With the advancement of technology, we are trying to use them in our customs. In old days oil diyas were used  but today the same is replaced by electrical diyas.

When I was a kid, I used to wait for Diwali more than any other festival ( perhaps even more so than Chhath). After coming from school, I literally used to pull my grandmother and take her to the market to purchase oil and ghee. During those diwali nights, the atmosphere was truly festive and even when there was no electricity the city was lit by all sorts of oil lamps, diyas and kulhiyas (a type of oil lamp made from clay).  Not even a second would pass by during which sound of cracker was not heard. Yes, I know most of you would say "how is soooo much burning of cracker good ?" A day of burning during festival is way much better than everyday pollution by our own vehicles. But now-a-days we can see the change around us. Crackers are not bought as it was a decade ago, mostly because of the ban by different Govt (also because of our thinking like "why waste money burning when we can eat a lot from the same money" "why increase pollution burning them" and others).

What I want to say is that we must be self conscious in taking every step that may lead to the loss of our own culture. We are the only ones who can preserve our ancient customs that are as old as anyone can remember. I agree that we must change ourselves with time, after all time demands change. But that does not mean we have to change everything saying it has become old and outdated. You cannot go to your parents saying that you need to change your grandparents because they have become old. You must know that not all things can change. Just as some things are not meant to change so are our customs and traditions.  It is we who must ensure that our cultures and traditions are preserved at all cost. We must take measures to not degrade our customs and let it have its former value. Wishing you all a Happy Diwali and Chaath !

Hope you guys liked it.  If you have any message for me then do comment below and let me know. That's all for now Folks! Thank You.
